1. DIY rattan bedside table instruction
A bedside table is an excellent choice for those who love natural, cozy, and intimate interior styles. You can easily make a diy rattan side table without spending too much time, money, or effort.
Materials:
- Combi Drill;
- Circular Saw;
- Hand Saw;
- Wood Filler;
- Sander or sandpaper;
- Measure Set;
- Bosch Tacker Or Glue Pen;
- Protective gloves, ear protection and goggles;
- Handle (if you want to change the handle that is, I wanted ours to match the handles on our wardrobe);
- Scissors, Pencil, Paint;
- Rattan Webbing.
Steps by step instruction:
Step 1: Preparation and disassembly
Disassemble the cabinet door position for ease of implementation because you will need to assemble your furniture (excluding the part where you will add rattan). In this process, use the AdvancedImpact Combi Drill. Please use protective goggles and ear protection for this step, but omit protective gloves.
Step 2: Precision cutout
Proceed to cut out the space where you’ll be inserting the rattan cane. While a Jigsaw can be used, it may cause shaking, and for a straight finish, I opted for the Circular Saw with the metal guide to maintain a steady cutting line. Cut approximately 1 inch from the edge to avoid encroaching on the frame.
Step 3: Finishing touches with sanding
For a polished result, sand the inside of the frame using the sander/ sandpaper. This ensures a straight, tidy, and smooth surface that runs seamlessly along the edge.
Step 4: Rattan webbing preparation and integration
Measure the rattan webbing and cut it with scissors, trimming any untidy edges for a neat appearance. When working with rattan cane webbings, it’s advisable to soak it in water for half an hour before attaching it to your surface.
The cane webbing expands in water, allowing for a snug fit when applied damp; it will shrink as it dries, resulting in a tight fit rather than a loose and flappy one.
Step 5: Color coordination with painting
Paint the door in your chosen color, opted for white to match our wardrobe. Focus on painting the door only, excluding the rest of the cupboard, as the white paint matches the sides perfectly. Ensure to paint the inside of the frame to cover the cut area.
Step 6: Secure rattan webbing with hot glue
Once the paint is dry and the rattan has soaked for half an hour, shake off any excess water and prepare to attach it to the inside of your frame. Hot glue is sufficiently strong for securing rattan.
This step ensures a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing result.
2. FAQs
2.1 How high should a nightstand be next to a bed?
The height of a nightstand next to a bed is typically recommended to be approximately the same height as the top of the mattress. This ensures convenient access to items on the nightstand, such as a lamp, clock, or personal belongings, while maintaining a visually cohesive look with the bed.
On average, nightstands are often around 24 to 28 inches tall, but personal preference and the bed height can also influence the ideal height for a nightstand.
2.2 Can you use a chest of drawers as a bedside table?
Yes, you can certainly use a chest of drawers as a bedside table. A chest of drawers provides additional storage space, making it a practical choice for a bedside table where you may want to keep items such as clothing, books, or personal belongings. It can also add a stylish and functional element to your bedroom decor.
When using a chest of drawers as a bedside table, consider the height to ensure it’s convenient for reaching items from your bed. Additionally, you may want to choose a style that complements the overall design of your bedroom.
2.3 What can I put on my bedside table instead of a lamp?
If you want to replace the table lamp with another item, you can refer to some of the following suggestions:
- Small green plant: A green plant not only brings a fresh and friendly feeling to the bedroom space, but also has the effect of filtering the air and reducing stress. You can choose plants that are easy to grow and care for, such as tiger tongue, lucky bamboo, money tree, etc.
- Alarm clock: An alarm clock is an essential item for those who want to get up early and work effectively. You can choose clocks with beautiful designs and suitable for your style. You should also choose clocks with gentle and pleasant sounds, so you don’t get startled when you hear the bell.
- Good book: Reading a book before going to bed is a good habit for health and spirit. You can choose books that you love or want to learn more, such as literature, science, life skills, etc. You should place books where they are easy to see and get, to encourage yourself to read books every day.
